Trumpf TruMicro 5080 cuts transparent materials, fast

Ultra-short pulse lasers are used to separate transparent materials in the electronics industry, and with the newly developed TOP Cleave optics, these materials can now be cut at a speed of 1 m/s. Using this option, the TruMicro 5080 ultra-short pulse laser from Trumpf can even cut glass 1 mm thick.

The system works through the use of ultra-short, pulsed laser beams which are focused inside the glass to modify a narrow zone along the desired cleavage line. The modification generates intrinsic tensions to ensure the glass fractures in a controlled manner. The resultant surface is mirror-smooth and accurate to a hundredth of a millimetre – no matter whether straight or curved, says Trumpf.

The TruMicro 5080 delivers repetition rates at up to 1,000 kHz, with a maximum of 500 micro-Joules. According to Trumpf, it is the highest energy pulse in the world for ultra-short pulse lasers in industrial use.
