Tornos MultiSwiss bridges gap between single- and multi-spindle lathes

With the newly developed Tornos MultiSwiss 6X14, the core of the machine is the barrel with individual headstocks. Here, the hydrostatic bearings of the central barrel and individual spindles offer advantages, with regard to damping behaviour.

The barrel on the MultiSwiss rotates and is positioned using a torque motor that is said to deliver short indexing times. On the barrel, six spindles each have their own synchronous drive motor that accelerates to a maximum of 8,000 rpm within one second and provides C-axis capability in all positions. The spindles are independent of each other and provided with X-axis movement via six independent slide units. Two slides in the third and fourth positions may also integrate an optional Y-axis.

The stroke of the spindles in Z amounts to 50 mm, which allows (when combined with the other axis) the machine to operate like a single-spindle system.
