Sumitomo’s Brilliant Coat creates glossy surface finishes

Sumitomo has launched its latest generation of lubricated film coatings, designated ‘Brilliant Coat’, on its latest TI500Z cermet inserts. The inserts are aimed at the finishing of low carbon and general steels where high surface finish and dimensional stability is required. In addition, Brilliant Coat is said to offer extended tool life and to reduce flank wear by up to 200%, in comparison with most conventional cutting tools.

Brilliant Coat is a lubrication film coating that is designed to reduce fracture resistance in the cermet, as well as limit adhesion and the low reactivity contact area between the insert and workpiece. The upshot, according to Sumitomo, is high sheen, ultra-smooth surfaces.

TI500Z inserts are available in positive and negative M- and G-class. M-class negative types have a strong cutting edge giving chip control when cutting materials such as soft steels, while G-class is more suitable for lighter to fine finishing.
