Sumitomo has developed a range of SEC series plunge-cut drilling and milling cutters using the advantage of a flat cutting edge to create a near flat-bottom profile. In action, the design of both tool types is said to reduce any taper in the stock material left at the bottom of a blind pocket or chamber, which can influence finishing cuts. As a result, the tools are suited to pocketing applications in aerospace components, as well as the machining of moulds, housings, pumps and valve bodies.
As the two SEC cutter types, PDL Plunge Drill and PCT Plunge Mill, are fed in the Z-axis, the latest format of insert position accommodates the need for maximum rigidity.
The PDL holders for 2xD and 3xD depth-to-diameter ratios, and PCT holders for 3xD and 5xD, are both available in 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm diameters. Each has through-coolant feed capability.
