Solid carbide cutters for steel

Several new high performance solid carbide cutters from Dormer have been developed primarily for high metal removal, semi-roughing, semi-finishing and finishing operations in steels.

All incorporate Dormer's unique unequal helix concept, the primary benefit of which is that it gives the milling operation a far greater degree of stability. Resistance to 'chatter' and reduced tool vibration promote a controlled and stable operation, superior finish on the component, lower wear and tear on machine tools and enhanced tool life. Consequently, metal removal rates can be increased considerably while greater axial and radial depths of cut can be achieved at high cutting parameters. Available in medium (S250 & S252) or long (S254 & S255) cut lengths and with a choice of cylindrical or Weldon shanks to increase the application field, the range covers not only new generation machines but also enables the performance of older generation machines to be fully exploited. A new roughing cutter (S335) further extends the applications covered. In addition to the unequal helix angle, it incorporates a special HRA asymmetric chip breaker to reduce the stress concentration on the most critical point of the profile. Extremely sharp end teeth improve performance, particularly in plunging and helical interpolation operations, and a special edge rounding treatment reduces chipping. All cutters benefit from Super-G (Aluminium Chromium Nitride) coating for outstanding wear resistance and reduced chipping problems on the cutting edges, with subsequent benefits to tool life and productivity.
