Sandvik Coromant’s ceramic grade for high speed machining of cast irons

Sandvik Coromant's silicon nitride ceramic grade is aimed at the high speed milling and turning of cast irons.

Ceramic CC6190 grade inserts are available for Sandvik Coromant face mills such as CoroMill 245 and CoroMill 365, as well as for Sandvik AUTO cutters. In trials, Sandvik Coromant demonstrated that 25 per cent higher cutting speed can be applied using a ceramic CC6190 turning insert grade with no detriment to tool life, in comparison with CC6090. Turning and facing a grey cast iron brake disc under dry cutting conditions produced 200 pieces, 33 per cent more than a comparable reference grade. Cutting speed was 800 m/min, feed was 0.45 mm and depth of cut was 3.0 mm. When dry face milling a grey cast iron valve at a cutting speed of 845 m/min, feed per tooth of 0.45 mm and 3.0 mm depth of cut, CC6190 exhibited significantly smaller wear and maintained a far sharper edge-line than a comparable reference insert. Silicon nitride ceramic is a reinforced material where elongated silicon nitride crystals form a strong lattice with exceptional toughness. In Sandvik Coromant's CC6190 grade, the strengthening effect is combined with a low glassy phase content to increase wear resistance. The result is that high cutting speed capability is extended for both milling and turning operations in cast iron.
