Mollart launches high penetration rate Botek gun drill

Mollart Engineering has launched single-lip, solid carbide gun drill development from deep hole drilling tooling specialist Botek. The gundrills can be used in machining centres and lathes fitted with through-tool coolant supply and low- pressure air/oil mist (MQL) systems, as well as special-purpose gundrilling machines.

The Botek Typ 113-HP gundrill is able to provide high performance, high accuracy drilling of holes between 0.7 and 12 mm diameter with a depth-to-diameter ratio of up to 80:1. The tools will perform high penetration rate drilling over a wide range of materials from aluminium to high strength steels. Each tool is coated, has a special nose grind and highly polished flute with a kidney-shaped coolant channel to ensure maximum evacuation of chips from the cutting zone. Mollart says that in recent trials on 42 CrMo4 steel producing a 5 mm diameter hole by 100 mm deep, the Botek drill was run at 70 m/min with a feedrate of 800 mm/min. A further 50 CrMo4 steel component was drilled using a coolant pressure of 140 bar and penetrated with a 3 mm diameter drill to a depth of 95 mm at 80 m/min with a feedrate of 950 mm/min. To demonstrate its ability in drilling an aluminium component with a 7 mm diameter hole to a depth of 210 mm, the machine was run at 150 m/min using an emulsion at 80 bar pressure with a feedrate of 1,700 mm/min.
