Mapal tooling management

The UNISCALE-M measuring machine, from Mapal, provides machine tool users with a convenient and dependable way of eliminating the losses in productivity that result from inadvertently using damaged or out-of-specification cutting tools.

The UNISCALE-M quickly and accurately measures lengths, angles and radii on any type of drill, milling cutter or reamer. This makes it ideal: for the inspection of new tools on receipt to ensure that they meet the required specifications before they enter the production chain; for checking tools that are in production use to determine the level of wear; and for carrying out checks on tools that have been reground, to ensure that the regrinding has been carried out correctly. The UNISCALE-M incorporates user-friendly software with a high-resolution camera system, making it easy to measure key parameters including, for example, face geometries, peripheral geometries and step lengths in solid carbide cutting tools. Coating thicknesses can also be measured quickly and conveniently and surface details on the tool can be viewed and analysed as an aid to evaluating wear. Tools with diameters up to 30 mm can be accommodated by the UNISCALE-M, and are easily secured to the tool adapter with the aid of a simple clamping system. The tool adapter can be pivoted through 180º to facilitate measurements of, for example, the tip angle on solid carbide drills. Included with every UNISCALE-M are a storage system for the tool mounting aids and a logging system that facilitates the recording and organisation of results.
