Kennametal Mill4-11 cutter suits smaller machining centres

Kennametal is expanding its Mill 4 family of indexable insert milling cutters with the Mill 4-11, which is designed for the 40-taper CAT/BT and HSK50 spindles found on many smaller machining centers. Due to its free-cutting capabilities, it is said to be suitable for successful metal removal in less than rigid set-ups and on light-duty machine tools, multi-tasking centres and driven-tool lathes.

The Mill 4-11 employs the same insert design as its larger cousin, the Mill 4-15, but is 24% shorter and 34% narrower. With an 11 mm maximum cut length, this addresses the needs of job shops and manufacturers producing smaller parts and features.

Among its principal features is the step down, which ensures very little mismatch between passes. For example, using a 63 mm diameter Mill 4-11 and Kennametal’s SGE geometry, the company was able to achieve less than 8 micron deviation between successive 6 mm deep passes.
