Inserts improve HRSA machining

HCN5115, an integral part of WNT’s new Mastertool Dragonskin range, has been developed specifically to address the problems encountered when machining heat resistant super alloys (HRSA), namely heat generation at the cutting edge.

Improvement has been achieved through the creation of a grade that not only has high heat resistance, but also high wear resistance. These properties have been arrived at through grade and geometry developments, the latter designated -M34 by WNT (UK). The result is increased cutting data and tool life of over 85 per cent in some applications with WNT’s customers reporting across the board gains. In one example cutting speed was increased from 35 m/min to 65 m/min and depth of cut increased from 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm. At the same time tool life increased from 12 components to 30 components. Initially HCN5115 inserts are only available in negative geometries (CNMG, DNMG, SNMG, TNMG, VNMG and WNMG) but the range will expand in the coming months.
