Guhring ramps up milling range

The recent EMO exhibition in Hanover witnessed the arrival of the next generation of milling technology from Guhring: the RF Speed mill range. Developed for the machining of tough materials, the RF100 5-Speed and RF100 7-Speed solid-carbide end mills feature an increased tooth number. As a result, the 5-fluted 5-Speed and 7-fluted 7-Speed generate high metal removal rates with stable process reliability, even when processing difficult materials, says the company.

Providing high-performance roughing even at large depths of cut, the two ranges maximise feed rate parameters during high metal removal rate operations. As part of the Guhring Trochoidal Cutting (GTC) series, the RF100 5-Speed and RF100 7-Speed are suitable for machining stainless steels, special alloys and a variety of steels and cast irons.

At limited machine speeds, or cutting speeds limited by the material, the RF 100 5- and 7-Speed are said to ensure high feed rates and long tool life thanks to the increased number of teeth. In addition, the tools can conduct trochoidal milling at up to 10% radial depth of cut.

On the RF 100 5-Speed, this performance is credit to a 38° helix angle with unequal flute spacing that reduces contact points during low-vibration machining. Similarly, the RF 100 7-Speed incorporates a 32° helix angle with unequal flute spacing for quiet cutting and low-vibration operations. On both end mills, the large, wide flutes and chip breakers have been integrated for fast and secure chip evacuation. With centre-cutting capabilities, the tools have increased clearance in the centre for efficient plunging/helical milling.

The optimal cutting conditions for the RF 100 5-Speed can be found in applications on all tough materials up to 1,200 N/mm², and where a ramping angle of up to 10° is required. Guhring’s latest end mill is also suitable for slotting with cutting depths up to 1xD, and helical milling. Although the RF 100 7-Speed is also a good choice for tough materials up to 1,400 N/mm², the 7-fluted variant can additionally be applied to helical milling at in-feeds of up to 0.05xD per cycle.

From a dimensional perspective, the RF 100 5-Speed is available in cutting diameters of 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20 mm, with a necked diameter that permits cutting depths from 20 to 62 mm, depending upon the diameter selected. Furthermore, each of the six diameter options are available with three different cutting-edge radii. Options range from 0.2 mm radius to 1 mm on the smallest 6 mm tool, and a 1.5, 2 and 3 mm radius on the largest 20 mm end mills.

Like the RF 100 5-Speed, the 7-Speed is available in diameters from 6 to 20 mm, with a necked length for additional reach and clearance when slotting and ramping. The 7-Speed also has an overall cutting depth of 20 to 62 mm, and offers an equally large variety of corner radii.
