Floyd offers Hommel & Keller on-turning-centre component roll marking

Floyd Automatic Tooling is now offering the Zeus range of roll marking solutions and tools from German company Hommel & Keller. These enable workpieces to be marked directly on the turning centre. Zeus roll marking tools can be used with continuous rolling (like knurling) or a spring return systems. Both eliminate a secondary operation, consequential potential for inaccuracy and tool changeover time. They can also avoid batches getting mixed up.

The Zeus continuous roll-marking technology is custom-built for the individual workpiece. It is approximately 0.15 mm smaller in diameter than the component and rolls the marking pattern with multiple revolutions to produce high definition marks on all types of materials and components. Driving knurls on the roll deliver fast and extremely precise marks, adds Floyd. The rolls can be flipped 180º to provide marking in two directions. Additionally, customers can specify special marks such as logos, backslashes and patterns. A user-friendly mounting means that operators can efficiently and easily change the rolls, so the tool can be used for a broad range of different markings and workpieces. The benefit of the spring loaded design is that it is suitable for batches of any quantity regardless of how large or small and it can be applied to parts of all diameters and shapes. Unlike the continuous roll marking, Hommel & Keller's spring-loaded units require greater contact pressure as the required depth must be achieved in one revolution. The end-user is able to rapidly and easily set the tool for different texts, numbers and characters right up to the shoulder of the workpiece. The flexibility of the spring-loaded system enables the customer to generate the required impression by rolling only once or even partially to acquire the desired pattern. This system does not require a perfect diameter match between component and roll. It has three driving points to ensure marking quality. Both roll marking systems are available in a number of width and diameter options with additional designs available to accommodate the marking of chamfers and other non-uniform shapes.
