Faster cutting in difficult materials

Higher speed and feed rates are the hallmarks of ATI Stellram's redesigned 5505VX ball nose milling tool, which is specially designed for use on a range of difficult-to-machine materials.

Aimed at aerospace, power generation and mould and die component makers, the Stellram 5505VX milling tool is suitable for medium-to-heavy roughing operations on nickel-, cobalt- and titanium-based alloys as well as stainless steels, tool steels and cast irons. The new-look tool accommodates an extensive selection of high-performance, double-edged, helical inserts in a choice of resilient grades including SP6519, a robust substrate finished with the latest generation, hard-wearing TiAlN PVD coating. ATI Stellram has boosted the tool's ability to withstand the most challenging milling applications by incorporating an axial retention screw, which further supports the insert in the pocket and prevents any movement under heavy axial loads. Other benefits of the Stellram 5505VX milling tool include better surface finish and component quality, longer tool life and lower inventory levels. Available in a variety of diameters, from 20 mm to 50 mm, and a selection of shank types, comprising Weldon, cylindrical (plain), taper and modular, the modular system allows the user to extend the length to diameter ratio of the extension assembly up to 8:1, thanks to the combined design of the tool, insert geometry and tool extension. This combination helps reduce the effect of cutting forces by producing a positive cutting action within a more stable cutting environment by absorbing vibration through the addition of the heavy metal tool extension. ATI Stellram is set to expand the program later this year with the introduction of 12 mm and 16 mm diameter tools.
