Cut 200 Dedicated EDM from GFMS targets aerospace applications

GF Machining Solutions (GFMS) has introduced a wire EDM designed specifically for aerospace applications, including the machining of fir tree patterns on jet engine turbine parts. The machine – the CUT 200 Dedicated – is said to offer an alternative to conventional fir tree machining methods, such as broaching.

In machining trials conducted by GFMS, the wire EDM process was compared and evaluated against broaching. The results indicated that a 40% reduction in costs, with no loss in productivity, could be achieved by using the Cut 200 Dedicated.

The machine is based on the AgieCharmilles Cut 200 wire EDM, but has been re-engineered to accommodate a rotary/tilting table that supports automated production. The table, which provides full C-axis rotation and ±20° B-axis tilt, can accommodate workpieces weighing up to 250 kg. Other features include in-process probing, customised power generator settings and process monitoring/tracking software.
