Boehlerit, one of the world's leading manufacturers of carbide cutting materials for metal, wood and plastic machining tools and a pioneer in carbide development, has unveiled Nanolock Black, a coating that supports dry steel milling.
This development builds on the company's nano-layer coatings, which was subsequently enhanced to become Nanolock and is notable for its ability to combine toughness and hardness. Nanolock Black is the latest iteration.
In developing this, Boehlerit engineers created a special coating of titanium carbonitride, or TiCN, via chemical vapour deposition. This new coating adheres well to cutting tools and reduces wear and tear, plus it has a surface that boasts extraordinarily fine, needle-shaped features that improve adhesion between coating layers.
Nanolock Black gets its name from the black, heat-resistant ceramic layer that has been added, with this boosting the milling performance of inserts so coated.
The coating supports dry milling, and in tests cutting speeds of up to 300 m/min have been demonstrated in manganese rail and steel plate machining.
