The novel modular Multiring EM/FM90 porcupine-like cutter from Avantec Zerspantechnik has been expanded with the addition of a 125 mm diameter unit.
The Multiring EM/FM90 system sees a porcupine-like cutter built from a back-end plus intermediate and bottom rings that hold Enduro inserts with high positive rake angle. The left and right helix positioning of the inserts in the tool alternately creates a positive and negative effect, thus minimising the axial and compressive forces. This shell end milling tool therefore protects the spindle, head and bearing, while it requires considerably less power than other tools of its kind, therefore guaranteeing extended milling performance.
Compared to traditional, solid porcupine cutters, the Multiring EM/FM90 delivers higher performance, with end-users said to have seen increases in cutting data of 500 – 800%, plus tool life some 10-15 times greater. This offsets the higher initial price, offering users benefits where serial production is required.
The full range comprises units of 40, 45, 63, 80, 100 and now 125 mm diameter, with rings of 16-22 mm thickness allowing lengths up to 4xD to be employed.
