Unicut provides subcontract assembly and machining for defence industry contract

Unicut Precision has won a long term contract to supply complete sub-assemblies, including final test, at a rate of 50 per day for the defence industry. The assembly comprises 27 components, of which eight high tolerance parts are machined on its Citizen CNC sliding head and Miyano fixed head turn-mill centres.

The project includes the supply of Kanban-style daily production in special protective cases that accept a batch of 50 units. Each assembly, which takes 36 different steps to complete, is carried out in the special clean room area within the 18,000 ft² machine shop in Welwyn Garden City. The contract includes sourcing bought-out components such as fixings, seals, ball bearings and labels plus treatment of certain components to meet the customer's specification. Once delivered to the customer each sub-assembly is subjected to stringent testing cycles. However, in the next few months Unicut will accept total responsibility for the complete project following the installation of a test rig and special gauges at its works. "We started with the customer by just machining certain key components however, due to our reliability of supply and the level of quality maintained, the customer has progressively increased our participation. We have now renegotiated to accept total responsibility for delivery of assemblies to line," said joint managing director Jason Nicholson.
