Turn off; be safe; be legal

Machine tool element specialist Elesa is reminding machine tool users that the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC becomes effective on 29 December this year and that section 1.4.2.2 covers movable guards that must be associated with an interlocking device.

This set-up prevents the start of hazardous machinery functions, until the guards are closed, by sending a command whenever guards are not closed. Elesa's CFS hinge is highlighted as a possible solution. These are suitable for use in hazardous areas to Cat 1 and work in such a way that they switch off equipment when a door or panel is opened. Alternatively, the CFS unit may be used to remotely indicate status, eg for access monitoring.
