Southhampton-based laser manufacturer SPI Lasers, a member of the Trumpf Group, has acquired Rugby-based fibre laser company JK Lasers.

With almost 100 employees, JK Lasers's core competence is in fibre lasers with outputs from 100 watts to 4 kilowatts, as well as combiners for joining laser sources and other beam guidance components. The most important target groups of JK Lasers include machine manufacturers for laser cutting applications and for additive manufacturing, Trumpf says, adding that its expertise and product focus area complements that of SPI Lasers. The JK Lasers site will act as an additional production and development centre for fibre lasers and optical components for the group.

GSI Group reported that the sale price was $31.5 million, or EUR 30 million.

"We decided to sell JK Lasers for an attractive valuation in order to redeploy the capital to invest in our growth strategies of building world class franchises in our core businesses, such as laser scanning and beam delivery, low power CO2 lasers, medical technologies and precision motion products," said John Roush, Chief Executive Officer of GSI Group Inc.

He added that JK Lasers's sales were $22 million (£13.4 million), but did not have 'material' effects on its profits.
