Established in 1996 by Rob Frain and business partner Stuart Hutchins, R&S Laser was armed with little more than a welding set and a drilling machine at the outset, but the company is now in the final stages of developing its own portfolio of radiant ceiling panels, used commonly in offices, schools and hospitals, as well as a range of trench floor heating units.
R&S has the manufacturing capacity in place and will sell the products via satellite agents located strategically around the UK, and through an online 'boutique'.
Like its subcontracting capability, these products will rely on Amada technology for their manufacture. The company's latest investment is a new Amada LC 4020 F1 4 kW laser with ASLUL automation tower, which adds to an already impressive machine capacity list.
It builds on the initial January 1997 installation of a pre-owned Amada laser cutter and new Amada press brake – the latter is still in daily operation as one of seven Amada press brakes on site.
"We take good care of our machines – they all have services by Amada personnel twice a year, which extends their useful life considerably and helps avoid painful downtime," explains Mr Frain. "Amada's back-up and service is second-to-none and I'm not sure I would get that elsewhere. It's the reason why they have retained my business."
In 2007, the company relocated to its present site in the Hockley area of Birmingham, doubling its floor space to 30,500 sq ft. The move also paved the way for the acquisition of an Amada EML 3610 punch/laser combination machine with MP300 automation. The company then invested in an Amada F0 3015 4kW laser and now the Amada LC 4020 F1 4kW linear drive laser. Both machines feature an Amada ASLUL automation tower, allowing unmanned running for extended periods, thanks to their 21 tonne handling and storage capacity (R&S Laser operates only a single shift).
R&S recently installed its own nitrogen-generating plant for the laser machines and is now looking at other energy-saving measures, such as ultra-efficient factory lighting and alternatives to conventional chiller plant.
"We have always believed in continual investment to improve our processes," explains Mr Frain. "Today, we can offer our customers a full portfolio of services - from concept and design, through to laser profiling, punching, forming, welding, machining, degreasing, painting, assembly and delivery."
