To be delivered from 2023, the new metro trains for the Piccadilly Line will significantly increase capacity and throughput. They will be based on Siemens Mobility's Inspiro family of metro trains that offer passengers substantially improved passenger experience. The new trains will be more spacious, air-conditioned, have walk-through carriages and improve accessibility.
This order has been awarded with the expectation that Siemens Mobility will build trains for all four Deep Tube lines - the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City. Creating a single train design will allow Transport for London to maximise cost savings through greater standardisation of train operations, staff training, equipment, spares and maintenance. To maximise whole life benefit and return on investment, Siemens Mobility will also be offering a range of added value digital services using its Railigent asset management suite of applications.
The yet-to-be-built Goole site is likely to see £200 million invested and create as many as 700 skilled jobs in engineering and manufacturing – as well as employing an additional 250 people during the construction phase. In addition, an estimated 1,700 indirect jobs can be expected throughout the UK supply chain.
The proposed site, a 67-acre area close to the M62, includes manufacturing and commissioning buildings, warehouses, offices and stabling sidings with potential for the development of a test track.
