PCML machinist Dominic Roach is celebrating achieving a first-class degree in Engineering from Anglia Ruskin University, after three years of part-time study at University Centre Peterborough.

The 24-year old has worked for PCML for seven years, since leaving school in Wisbech. After his GCSEs, Roach undertook a one-year, level 3 engineering course at the College of West Anglia, which, he says, “gave me the engineering bug.”

And he continues: “I’ve had great support from PCML, from my HNC, right through to completing my degree. The company has allowed me time off to study and attend the course, and has also encouraged me to use its latest CNC machines and other equipment, to learn hands-on.”

Says Lorraine Canham, PCML’s HR manager: “We are thrilled for Dominic. He is a brilliant example of how far hard work and commitment can take you. His progress over the years has been amazing and we are proud to support him. He’s a great asset to PCML and a credit to himself and his family.”

Dominic says he chose a career in engineering because of a keen interest in anything mechanical. “I love cars, boats, trains, etc. Studying for an engineering degree and working at PCML has given me the opportunity to learn both the theory and also the practice.

“At the college, I met and made friends with other student engineers, some of whom even work for PCML customers.”

As if a first-class degree wasn’t enough, Dominic has set his sights even higher. “I want to become a professionally qualified engineer; an IEng. And since this was an accredited course by the Institute of Engineering Technology, it takes me closer to achieving my ambition.”
