NPL asks industry about next national measurement strategy

The National Physical Laboratory is asking for industry requirements of metrology with an online survey. It is conducting research on behalf of government.

Responses will feed into the National Measurement Strategy for the 2016-2021 period, a time for which the institute has big plans. NPL says: “Over the next five years, we will take a national approach to sustaining and enhancing the UK’s world-leading measurement science and facilities. We will join up the long-term investment in measurement science and ensure it benefits all sectors of the UK economy from the smallest of SMEs to the largest of organisations. We will make measurement capability accessible at the point of use and embedded in business, science and government for the UK to become a better place to live, innovate and do business.”

In particular, NPL says it plans to build a network of access points for measurement, develop a comprehensive framework of measurement skills training, and accelerate innovation and the adoption of new technology with strong partnerships across the UK’s science base, catapults, Innovate UK, British Standards Institute (BSi), government and business.

It says: “Measurement is the currency of technical trade,” adding that there is over £622 billion worth of trade in goods that relies on their measured quantity, equivalent to 2% of GDP [according to a 2009 Deloitte study].
