Midas provide tooling for street furniture mouldings

Bedford-based mould tool specialist, Midas Pattern Company, has completed a project to supply rotational mould tool sets for new 'twin bins' designed for use in a wide range of environments.

Street furniture specialist Broxap decided to build on its success in the manufacture of steel, stainless steel and cast iron products, by extending its range of plastic litter bins. In order to achieve this objective Broxap has invested heavily in a new range of rotationally moulded products, starting with the twin bin. Rototek, a rotational moulding specialist, was given this task, and the company's product development manager, Stuart Wright, took on the role of technical adviser for the project, recommending London Associates (LA Design), Berkhamsted, to design the product. The design focussed on a durable, attractive twin bin with an elliptical shape, which is convenient for use in areas with large numbers of pedestrians. Dual apertures in both sides of the bin accept recyclables such as glass, paper and card in one side, and non-recyclables, such as food waste, in the other. According to Mr Wright, Midas was selected because the company "not only provided the best price, but also offered the best commercial proposal. Throughout the project we made fortnightly visits to Midas and this proved crucial to the project's success. "We tasked Midas with producing the rotational tools for all the mouldings, which had to be suitable for use on our machines at Newark. Part of this requirement was that certain parts of the mould tool needed to be detachable for operator access. I have to say that Midas did an excellent job. The durable cast aluminium tools they produced are impressive and contain many moving parts such as clamps and insert holders."
