Gearbox manufacturer gets £1.8 million machining centre

A £1.8 million Burkhardt + Weber machining centre has been installed by Renold Gears at its factory in Rochdale, UK, to increase production of gear cases in the mid to large gear unit market.

The new, high-precision machining centre has been supplied by machine tool supplier Geo Kingsbury, and will aim to speed up in-house production as a result of reduced set-up and run times.

The Burkhardt + Weber MCX 1400 has a work range of 3.2m on the X axis, 2.2m on the Y axis and 2.1m on the Z axis. It features fast tool management robotics, storage of up to 172 tools, twin pallets of 1,600mm x 1,600mm, and a workpiece swing diameter of 3,200mm.

It will enable the company to manufacture all custom product in house, enhance quality management, reduce lead times and increase production.
