FARO optical scanner wins award

Handheld FARO laser metrology product Faro Scanner Freestyle3D has won ‘Hardware Product of 2015’ at the Construction Computing Awards, in November at the Hotel Russell, London.

Although the awards focus on construction, Faro points out that the device is designed to help manufacturing, among other industries, easily and intuitively perform data acquisition.

The new FARO Freestyle 3D incorporates scanning technology that delivers accuracy of 1 mm at a 1 m range. The Freestyle 3D incorporates an automatic flash mode enabling users to scan objects in a variety of lighting conditions. Recently-developed software tools deliver a detailed visualisation of the created 3D point cloud, and an integrated best-point filter enhances the quality of the scan data by reducing noise by up to 35%. Post-processing functions also have been improved.

Also available with the product is a U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibration accessory to provide users with verifiable data accuracy, critical for forensic scanning and other highly regulated industries. On-site calibration data is exportable in PDF format, allowing information to be easily shared with other team members.

David Southam, 3D documentation regional manager Europe North, FARO Technologies UK says that everyone at FARO is proud the equipment won the award, as it faced stiff competition. “This prestigious accolade reflects the product’s phenomenal sales success since its recent launch, and the fantastic feedback we continue to receive from satisfied users.”
