D & D Engineering (Hull) has taken delivery of the first of XYZ Machine Tools' large capacity vertical machining centres, with this the largest VMC ever sold and delivered by the Devon headquartered machine tool firm, in fact.

The supplied XYZ 2010 VMC has X, Y and Z axes travels of 2,000, 1,000 and 800 mm, respectively, and features a 36 hp/8,000 rpm spindle and a 30-position toolchanger capable of handling tools weighing up to 15 kg, 220 mm diameter and 300 mm in length. The machine, with a maximum table load of 3,000 kg, will be used by D & D Engineering (Hull) across a wide variety of work for customers in the food, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), medical, agricultural, defence, and offshore sectors. D & D Engineering's managing director, Mark Robinson, says: "We are pleased to be the recipient of the first XYZ machine of its type in the UK and are confident that it will add significant value to our machining capacity, enhancing our already extensive portfolio of XYZ Machine Tools. "The greater capacity of the XYZ 2010 will allow us to compete for new work and produce what we already have more efficiently. As always, we would like to thank XYZ for their on-going support, in particular Nigel Atherton and Greg Hall for taking us to Germany to see an existing installation before committing to the order." Says Nigel Atherton, managing director, XYZ Machine Tools: "The addition of these large VMCs to the XYZ range is in response to a growing need for larger capacity machining centres, and to ensure quick delivery we plan to hold stock machines at our factory in Burlescombe, with an XYZ 3010 VMC with a BT50 spindle and ZF gearbox already on its way." The XYZ 2010 VMC delivered to D & D Engineering (Hull) is the smallest in this new range, in fact, with the two larger machines being the XYZ 2510 and 3010 VMC; the larger of which weighs 25 tonne and has X-axis travel of 3,000 mm. The mid-range machine features an X-axis of 2,500 mm, but both have 1,000 mm of travel in the Y-axis and 800 mm in the Z-axis. Control is provided by the Siemens Sinumerik 828D CNC unit with ShopMill conversational software. This also has supports download of data from CADCAM systems via USB, CF-card, or Ethernet, making it suitable for a wide variety of customers whose programming may vary. As with all XYZ CNC machines, these large VMCs come with three days training at one of XYZ's regional showrooms, which can be broken into two sessions of two initial days training followed by a further day once the customer has become more familiar with the machine. A 12-month no-quibble warranty is also included, which can be extended for an additional six years with XYZ's extended warranty and service packages.
