British Olympic cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy MBE will officially open MACH 2016 in a ceremony that will take place on Monday, 11 April at 10:00 am in Hall 5 of the NEC complex in Birmingham. (Updated: time now 10:00 not 10:30am, as previously stated)

The biennial MACH exhibition series is the largest manufacturing and engineering exhibition in the UK, with MACH 2016 running from Monday, 11 April to Friday, 15 April.

Sir Chris has a keen interest in manufacturing and has been integral in the development of his own range of bikes.

Part of the success of Great Britain’s cycling teams on track and road relates to specific knowledge and expertise in aerodynamics and structural engineering, which brought new levels of innovation to the sport of cycling. Engineering excellence and sporting success work hand in hand in this ultra-competitive sport, with Britain’s athletes’ competitive edge having been honed through UK design, testing and manufacturing.

MACH exhibitions are organised by the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA), and its CEO, James Selka, says: “We are delighted to welcome one of British sport’s true greats, Sir Chris Hoy, to open MACH 2016. Sir Chris and the British cycling team are a prime example of the synergy that can be achieved when top athletes and engineers work together; we are truly honoured to have him opening MACH 2016.”

In response, Sir Chris adds: “I'm delighted to open MACH 2016. I have an interest in manufacturing processes and the way advanced engineering can aid sporting performance. I'm looking forward to being at MACH 2016 and seeing what the future of British manufacturing has in store in the coming years.”
