Japan-headquartered DMG Mori Seiki Co is to acquire the lathe division of fellow Japanese machine tool maker Amada Machine Tools Co, Wasino Machinery Co. Wasino has focused on super-high-accuracy compact lathes, both universal and specialised, for automotive parts manufacture and the optics industry.

DMG Mori Seiki Co believes that, although currently focused on the Japanese market, the quality and brand name of Wasino would be accepted overseas, and that DMG Mori Seiki's strong global network* can multiply the business value of Wasino. In the announcement dated 27 October, DMG Mori Seiki Co says that Wasino machines are to be made at its Nara campus in Nara Prefecture, Japan, using existing facilities. The company will, however, employ more than 100 further employees to support the development, manufacture, sales, engineering and service of Wasino machines. A new company, DMG Mori Wasino, has been established for the new activity. *DMG Mori Seiki Co (previously Mori Seiki Co) jointly operates a global sales and service network with Germany-headquartered DMG Mori Seiki AG (previously Gildemeister AG) that is branded DMG Mori and which boasts some 145 locations world-wide. The two companies, DMG Mori Seiki Co and DMG Mori Seiki AG, also have cross-shareholdings in each other and will become one company in 2020.
