Alicona supports benchmarking standard for optical metrology

A group of German organisations including manufacturers of measuring instruments, users and technical bodies have developed a common data system for optical 3D surface measuring devices.

Says metrology manufacturer Alicona, a co-creator of the initiative: “Until now, varying concepts and definitions specified in manufacturers’ data sheets were hindering the comparability of optical 3D surface measurement devices.

“Transparent terms and a consistent data structure were defined. Standardised equipment and process specifications, developed by the members of ISO and DIN committees, eased the selection process of an optical 3D measurement device significantly. The Fair Data Sheet fulfils the users’ requirement to compare different measurement methods or instruments with each other.”

The initiative is supported by measurement systems manufacturers including also NanoFocus and Polytec, metrology users including Audi, Robert Bosch and Daimler (Mercedes Benz), as well as the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, the National Metrology Institute of Germany, and trade groups ZVEI (for electrical and electronic manufacturers) and VDI (Association of German Engineers).
