3D printing pioneer 3D Systems, with bases in the USA and Israel, is to acquire all outstanding shares in CADCAM software specialist Cimatron, headquartered in Israel.

Cimatron's main software lines are GibbsCAM (sold in the UK by Tech CADCAM) and CimatronE. Cimatron has UK offices in Warrington. The software company caters to all manufacturing sectors, offering specialised solutions for mould and die makers, as well as solutions for multi-axis production milling and turning. 3D Systems has a UK base in Hemel Hempstead, Herts. 3D Systems invented 3D printing with its stereolithography (SLA) printer and was the first to commercialise it in 1989. It also invented selective laser sintering (SLS) printing and was the first to commercialise that in 1992. The company says the transaction adds complementary products and technology, and extends its direct and reseller sales coverage globally. "We believe that the perfect strategic fit between our businesses, combined with expanded capabilities in product development, channel coverage and marketing, could present sizeable synergies that together offer significant long-term customer benefits and shareholder value," says Avi Reichental, president and CEO of 3DS. Responds Danny Haran, CEO of Cimatron: "We are delighted to combine our leading 3D CADCAM software products with 3DS' expanding design and manufacturing digital thread. We have always been focused on providing comprehensive, cost-effective solutions that streamline manufacturing cycles and shorten product delivery time, and as part of 3DS we can substantially accelerate our progress and extend our reach and impact."
