RARUK Automation majors on plug and play robot vision

Following RARUK Automation’s introduction of Pick-it 3D Robot Vision at last year’s PPMA show, the company is adding a top-of-the range version. The Pick-it M-HD high-definition 3D camera is suitable for the detection of almost any small or medium size objects, made from any material, with even higher accuracy.

Pick-it allows any camera-supported automation application to be built without expert help. There is no need for complicated programming, Pick-it simply guides the robot to see, pick and place products from bins, boxes, pallets and tables on to a CNC machine, assembly line, conveyor belt, welding station or work bench. Just show an example part to the plug-and-play camera, save it into the teach detection engine, tell Pick-it where to look with a click and drag tool, and the system will guide the robot to the nearest part. A typical detection cycle takes less than a second and Pick-it can find multiple components in one cycle.

The system can also be connected to the internet for remote monitoring, extending Pick-it’s potential for lights-out operations and integration into smart factory environments. And, as Pick-it can find parts in any location, there is no need for a bulky feeding line with inflexible and expensive elements.

Combining the latest Pick-it 2.0 3D picking software with the M-HD camera provides a set-up that is suitable for picking small parts with a high degree of accuracy. Indeed, this configuration allows RARUK Automation to provide a system that is 30 times more accurate and can detect objects which are 10 times smaller. Moreover, information can be processed 25% faster.

As with the other Pick-it cameras in the range, the M-HD model uses structured light to calculate 3D images. The big advantage of using this technology over traditional 2D cameras is that special lighting is not required. In addition, structured light is immune to reflections.

Other camera models in the range are: Pick-it M, which is best suited to the detection of objects larger than 50 by 50 by 10 mm; and Pick-it L, which is a wide-view camera making it first choice for unloading pallets – it can captures a full euro pallet within its field of view. All Pick-it cameras, including the M-HD model, are approved and ready for integration with Universal Robots, which are also available from RARUK Automation.
