Amada UK has announced it is sponsoring WorldSkills 2011, which comes to London later this year. The sponsorship means young engineering enthusiasts will test their skills on a laser profiling centre and press brakes.

The world's largest international skills competition will take place at ExCel, London on 5-8 October 2011. Amada will provide a Quattro CNC laser profiling centre and two HFE, down-stroking CNC press brakes for competitors in the sheet metal technologies event. "As a company we've always been very supportive of initiatives that encourage young people into engineering apprenticeships," says Amada UK's sales manager, Simon Scott. "Our future, and the future of manufacturing in the UK, is dependent upon this." The bi-annual WorldSkills competition promises to be the largest international event this side of the Olympics and will feature 1,000 young people from 50 nations competing in 45 skills areas from seven sectors. In the sheet metal technologies event, competitors will be assigned a manufacturing project. Amada's own apprentices – it has eight currently, with three more about to start – will be on hand to offer operational and safety advice if required. "We need to promote the message that engineering can provide a valuable, worthwhile and rewarding career choice," adds Scott. "Additionally, taking part in WorldSkills allows everyone to exchange and compare international benchmarks in a wide range of skills - leading to improved standards within industry and education."
