EEF software tool to help SMEs save energy, money and the planet

Small and Medium size companies (SMEs) across the UK are to receive a boost to their energy efficiency while saving thousands of tonnes of emissions in the process, following the award of a grant by the Carbon Trust to manufacturers’ association, EEF.

EEF is at the forefront of promoting environmental best practice and energy efficiency throughout manufacturing. However, it believes that SMEs often lack the resources of their larger counterparts to improve their performance and data surrounding energy usage and emissions from smaller companies remains poor. The grant will be used to buy access to a software tool that will help companies record their energy use and calculate associated carbon emissions before and after implementing energy efficiency measures. Using the network of regional EEF associations, a series of roadshows will be held around the country to help companies use the tool to record and monitor their energy efficiency. EEF will then monitor the progress and success of the project through the software tool that will report CO2 emissions. Through targeting 250 companies in the first phase it is hoped to save 20,000 tonnes of CO2 in the first year, rising to half a million tonnes over ten years. Should the scheme prove successful, it is hoped to extend it to more companies in the future.
