Zimmermann FZ33 dynamic portal overhead gantry machining centre boasts X-axis up to 40 m

The German-built machine Zimmermann FZ33 5-axis machining centre has a working volume from 3 to 40 m in the X-axis and up to 5 m in Y and 2.5 m in Z. It is suitable for the manufacture of components made from cast iron, tool steel, titanium, exotic alloys and light metals through to wood, expanded polystyrene, plastic and composites.

Described as one of a new generation of modular, highly dynamic portal machining centres, the Zimmermann FZ33 has a counterbalanced, overhead gantry and fixed bed. Consistent surface finish quality and accuracy result from machine's constant moving mass which comprises the structurally stiff gantry, cross slide, Z-axis ram and milling head. Acceleration up to 5 m/sec2 to linear feedrates of 60 m/min in the linear axes and rotation of 360º/sec in the rotary A and C axes lead to fast cycle times. Linear axes are actuated via the latest rack and pinion drives, with twin motors in X. Linear scales are fitted for accurate positional feedback to the control, which the customer can specify. A and C axes are built into the slimline VH 20 HSK-A63 spindle head, which is rated at 45 kW (100% duty cycle), 25,000 rpm. It features a 1,200 Nm, 220º A-axis with two electronically preloaded, backlash-free torque motors, while the C-axis has a direct drive torque motor. A 24 kW/18,000 rpm head with single A-axis drive is available for machining lighter materials. Accurate 3- and 4-axis machining is assisted by a holding torque of 3,000 Nm in the rotary axes. Even higher machining accuracy is possible using temperature stabilisation options. UK and Ireland sole agent Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools says the machine's performance makes it particularly suitable for finish milling of large moulds and dies. Other applications would be the production of wind turbine rotor blades, aircraft structural components, automotive models and patterns and boat structures. A smaller machine model, the Zimmermann FZ33 Compact, is also available with XYZ linear travels of 2.5 by 3 by 1.25 m. It has the option of a heavier duty, 60 kW (100% duty cycle), 22,000 rpm spindle and can be installed on a shopfloor without the need for a special foundation.
