Walter introduces new thread milling grade

The new Tiger-tec Gold WSM37G grade from Walter marks a technological leap into a new field of application. For the first time, this new grade will enable users to benefit from the advantages of innovative coating technology in the field of thread milling.

Like the proven Tiger-tec Gold milling grades, the new thread milling grade incorporates a unique layer structure that is a revelation in the market. It consists of a carbide substrate with a wear-resistant TiAlN layer and a multi-layer aluminium oxide layer (Al2O3), this is notable as it delivers superior temperature resistance, which delivers unprecedented performance levels for manufacturers.

The finishing touch to this new innovation is the eponymous gold-coloured ZrN top layer. This reduces friction and enables the machine shop to easily indicate any tool wear. Walter cites significantly higher cutting parameters and longer tool edge life as just some of the advantages for the end user.

In some of the tests undertaken, the grade has increased tool life by up to 100% with far fewer radius corrections. In addition, the grade offers maximum productivity when used in conjunction with multi-row thread milling cutters.

With the Tiger-tec Gold WSM37G grade, Walter is setting a new benchmark in the production of standard-compliant blind-hole and through-hole threads. Compatible with all Walter thread milling cutters, the Tiger-tec Gold WSM37G grade can be used universally with all ISO materials from P, M, K, N, S and H up to 55HRc, from a nominal diameter of 16mm or UNC¾. The indexable inserts incorporate chip breakers specially developed for thread milling with two proven geometries.

The two proven geometries are the universal D67 for maximum tool life and machining threads in high quantities, and the D61. This geometry has an anti-vibration land, which guarantees excellent operational smoothness even in difficult conditions such as extended tool projection lengths. Walter's new Tiger·tec Gold WSM37G grade further demonstrates the company's innovation prowess in thread milling technology.
