Tungaloy tailors three T5100 series to provide comprehensive cast iron turning solutions

Tungaloy UK has launched the T5100 Series for turning cast iron components for the automotive, heavy industry and general turning sectors.

Three Tungaloy T5100 Series grades accommodate a variety of turning applications in grey and ductile cast irons. The T5105 high wear resistance grade is for high speed continuous machining while the T5115 is an all-round grade for a range of processes from continuous to interrupted cutting. For heavy interrupted machining, Tungaloy has developed its T5125 grade that boasts extremely high impact resistance. The combination of a finely grained TiCN crystallised base with a high carbon content with a high density interlayer and a finely grained alumina layer, says Tungaloy, gives the T5100 series outstanding chipping and wear resistance, and reliability in the harshest of machining conditions. Also Tungaloy's PremiumTec technology gives the inserts a smooth surface that prevents chip adhesion and improves chip flow. The three insert grades are available with three different chip breakers to match all types of cutting applications. The CF chipbreaker has been designed for finish machining with low cutting forces. Suitable for low rigidity machining, the CF has a close-fitting seat design that increases seating stability, reducing vibration and improving tool life when turning. With an arc-shaped rake face, the CF chipbreaker reduces cutting forces, chattering and deformation for improved wear resistance in finishing applications. The CM type chipbreaker for the T5100 Series is designed as an all-rounder that offers excellent performance for continuously interrupted machining. CM shares the same close-fitting seat design as CF and, with a positive land design, the CM chipbreaker offers a balance of low cutting forces and chipping resistance that makes it ideal for general machining applications. The CH type chipbreaker for heavy machining processes has the same seating design, while the wide negative land offers a very strong cutting edge that is effective under even the most difficult and heavy of turning applications, says Tungaloy. The design and positioning of the land support ensures that the CH chipbreaker reduces chatter. To meet the diverse demands of customers, Tungaloy is making the T5100 Series available with Rhombic 80, 55 and 35º negative, square 90º negative, triangular 60º negative and trigon 80º negative insert designations. The numerous designations are available with corner radii from 0.4 to 1.6 mm and corresponding toolholders are also available to maximise cast iron machining productivity.
