Tooling system for fixed- and sliding-head lathes is diverse

The Ifanger MicroTurn system comprises an extremely diverse range of cutting tools and corresponding holders that can be employed successfully on all the well-known fixed and sliding-headstock CNC lathes. To meet the needs of the end user, suitable blanks are available to enable all customers to grind a specific cutting geometry. This is supported by the MicroTurn MTHV holder with a square-section shank and identical MTHA holder clamping system with a round-section shank. The blank can be clamped into the MTHV holder by the square-section shank and the desired cutting geometry can then be ground into the blank part. Capable of turning internal diameters from 0.7mm, the MicroTurn is available in a wide range of dimensions for boring (with or without chip breaker), copying, threading, grooving, chamfering and axial plunging operations. Using an MTSC hooked wrench, cutting tools in the holder can be changed with speed. As the changeover point is in the working area of the machine, freedom of access is assured at all times - dispensing with the awkward operation of unfastening the cutting tool from the side using an Allen key. Cutting tools are generally positioned via a prism at the end of the cutting tool shank, and a corresponding prism seat in the holder. However, the Ifanger MicroTurn system utilises a clamping system with a small clamping chuck to deliver an extremely positive grip on the cutting tool. The contact surface of the clamping chuck on the shank of the cutting tool is many times larger than the clamping surface area of other tool systems that commonly use one or two small Allen screws for clamping. The clamping chuck does not only grip the cutting tool around its entire shank circumference but it also draws the cutting tool into the prism seat during the clamping process. This positive clamping action on the cutting tool creates a powerful and solid mini-turning system during the machining operation that achieves longer service lives for the cutting tools, greater dimensional integrity and improved surface finish. The prism seat also enables very precise cutting tool alterations to be made. Besides holding a large stock of cutting tools and holders, special tools can be manufactured according to customer’s drawings. Using only the finest micro grained carbides for these cutting tools, all products can be supplied with a TiAlN coating. The MicroTurn is available with double holders for back working operations with additional tools available for monobloc tool holders.
