Sumitomo expands DGC milling cutter body range to accept eight and 16 corner inserts

Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal has expanded its DGC double-sided insert face milling cutter body range to accept SNMU square eight corner inserts or more economical 16-corner ONMU type in the same body pocket.

Developed for a wide range of applications, the SEC-Sumi Dual Mill DGC cutter body will accommodate seven types of Sumitomo double-sided insert grade and five variants of low-burr chipbreaker to meet a wide variety of face milling production needs on materials such as stainless steel, high temperature alloys, cast irons and non-ferrous materials. The high precision dual-purpose cutter body has a stronger than normal rating against single-sided cutters and is also available in coarse, medium and fine pitch types. The DGC body can be combined with Sumitomo's Super ZX multi-layered physical vapour deposition TiAiN and AlCm nano coated inserts to provide an effective balance of high cutting edge stability with extended wear and high resistance to chipping and built-up edge. The five chipbreaker styles of insert are available in G for general use, L for lighter machining and H for heavy cutting cycles. FG and FL styles are also available for maximum burr suppression under cut. The square, double-sided, eight corner ONMU inserts incorporate toughened edges to accommodate cutting depths up to 6 mm and a feedrate up to 0.4 mm per edge. Due to the large rake angle, edge sharpness reduces cutting forces extremely effectively. Sumitomo says when machining to depths up to 3 mm the cutting forces generated should be as low as that normally expected from a positive edge single-sided, four corner insert. Meanwhile, for a significant reduction in cost per edge when milling up to 3 mm depth of cut, the ONMU type 16-corner, two-sided inserts will provide an alternative for general machining applications. The SEC-Sumi Dual Mill DGC 13000RS cutter body is available in standard pitch (40 to 250 mm dia) with three to 10 insert positions, DGCM medium and fine DGCF pitch (50 to 250 mm dia) with four to 14 and five to 18 pockets respectively. There is also a shank type endmill version DGC 13000EW (40 mm to 63 mm dia) with three to four pockets able to accept both SNMU and ONMU inserts.
