Sumitomo adds more turning inserts to ACE-Coat AC 800P series

More high performance turning inserts aimed at the machining of a range of steels, including carbon, alloy and stainless, have joined the Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal ACE-Coat AC 800P series which boasts the company's Super FF coating.

AC810P, a high speed finishing grade that can be used for general turning, is quoted as having one and half times' the in-cut life of conventional inserts. Sumitomo recommends AC820P for carbon, alloyed and difficult to machine steels as its wear resistance to cratering has been optimised. The company says cratering accounts for almost a third of tool failures, especially in continuous or semi-interrupted turning applications. There is a choice of over 20 chip breaker styles including the latest NGE that provides an increased contact area to limit stress and damage to the rake face during high speed, fast feedrate applications. AC830P has an ultra-tough substrate for superior durability in heavy feed and interrupted cutting applications. Cutting speeds in low carbon steels can be between 100 and 250 m/min and between 90 and 200 m/min in carbon and alloy steels over 180 HB. It can also accommodate depths of cut between 1 and 5 mm and feedrates between 0.25 and 0.6 mm/rev. Super FF coating is a titanium carbon nitride and aluminium oxide some 8 microns thick that forms a dense and homogenous ceramic film structure. This not only enhances strength and fracture resistance, but also provides an ultra-smooth hard finish to aid chip flow, improve the shape of the chip and its exit from the cutting zone.
