Schunk linear driven PPU-E 15 pick and place unit speeds up small part assembly

Schunk's latest directly driven linear pick and place unit, the PPU-E 15, is custom-tailored for the use in electronics and small part assembly. Operating at peak performance, the PPU-E 15 can achieve 100 picks per minute with a repeat accuracy of 0.01 mm per axis.

All supply lines to 60 mm width PPU-E 15 are connected via the back panel. This allows several units to be installed side by side in a compact sandwich. If rotary indexing tables are used, more of the Schunk units can be arranged in a circle, or smaller round table diameters can be chosen. A complete cycle at a horizontal stroke of 145 mm and a vertical stroke of 45 mm, takes 0.6 seconds at an additional weight of 1 kg, and 2 x 50 ms gripping time. Like other Schunk linear directly driven pick and place units, the compact PPU-E 15 avoids the tolerance and wear issues associated with transmissions and, as the unit is equipped with two stationary motors and works without susceptible motor cables, cable breaks and system failures are also avoided. All supply lines for current, control unit, sensor system and pneumatics are plugged into the rear side stationary connection. The actuators are supplied with air, vacuum, current, and electric signals through a flat hybrid cable. A single air feed and up to six integrated valves supply the all the pneumatic actuators. This minimises compressed air and energy consumption while supporting fast cycle rates. For increased process reliability, horizontal and also vertical motions can be controlled with an absolute stroke measuring system. Besides a basic version without gripper interface, the PPU-E is available in six construction stages: with two, four, or six air and sensor interfaces, an electric rotary unit, a two-fold air and sensor connection and a vacuum interface. Optionally it is available with a Venturi nozzle or can be actuated via an external unit. The Z-axis can be also equipped with a spring compensation unit. Intelligent control units can control the gantry arm and the actuators without needing a higher-ranking control unit. The necessary software is already integrated and the plug and play PPU-E units are easily commissioned. Optionally, they can be quickly integrated into a system using a standard Bosch Rexroth control unit.
