New milling cutter for the face- and shoulder-milling of cast iron and hardened steel added to Mapal’s HX Milling line

Available in the diameter range 50 to 250 mm, the cutter can be used for face-milling with the company’s HX indexable inserts that have six cutting edges or for shoulder- and face-milling with W-shaped three-edge inserts. This flexibility is courtesy of innovative milling cartridges that can easily be changed to allow use of both insert types in the same tool body.

Both the HX indexable inserts and the W-shaped indexable inserts are designed as full-face variants, as they are tipped over the whole surface on one side with an extremely hard cutting PcBN composition.

The six-edge HX indexable inserts deliver extremely low-cost per cutting edge, while, in similar fashion, a significant boost to cost-effectiveness is derived from the W-shaped indexable inserts that allow three cutting edges to be applied to the shoulder-milling of cast iron and hardened steel.

The wear-resistant tool body is manufactured from a nickel-plated steel, making the tool body well-suited to the demands of hard machining. The use of a proven adjustment and clamping system guarantees optimum, backlash-free mounting of the indexable inserts whilst axial run-out can be set to micron precision by means of a wedge adjustment system on the milling cartridges. A central coolant supply directed at cutting edges ensures optimum swarf evacuation and tool life.

Positive results have been seen in the automotive and mould making sectors, in particular, where tool life, performance and surface finishes are critical.
