Latest 3D printer from SLM Solutions unveiled

The SLM 280 additive manufacturing system from SLM Solutions 3D prints fully dense metal parts and now features a newly developed body that encases the machine, filters and closed-loop powder sieving station into one seamless design.

Along with its 280 by 280 by 365 mm build platform, bi-directional powder re-coating and open system architecture, SLM Solutions says that an enhanced filter module reduces consumable costs, increases run time, and reduces process waste and waste disposal costs. What’s more, process waste can be safely disposed of as a dry mixture, while the filter can be re-used continuously.

Dr Richard Grylls, SLM Solutions’ technical director for North America, says: “Good shielding gas flow is essential to achieving homogeneous mechanical properties throughout the build. Too little gas flow and the soot from the process will hinder the laser; too much, and the powder bed will be disturbed. The new-look SLM 280 builds on the best-in-class gas flow of the previous model and puts SLM Solutions further into the lead of having the cleanest process chamber in the industry.”
