ITC expands Widia Hanita range of Varimill cutters with 4778 series

ITC's range now includes both the Widia Hanita 4777 and 4778 Varimill cutters. The centre cutting solid carbide end mills incorporate novel unequal flute spacing that creates a harmonic effect to reduce vibration as well as improve tool life and surface finishes when machining at high speeds and feeds.

The Widia Hanita 4777 and 4778 series' cutting diameters range from 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 to 20 mm with respective shank diameters from 6 to 20 mm. Both have 12 to 38 mm maximum length of cut on shank lengths from 55 to 104 mm. The optimised flute length and shank diameter combination, supports long tool life and productivity when machining anything from steel and stainless steels through to cast iron, non-ferrous materials, hard materials and the high temperature alloys common in the aerospace sector. The 4778 series range addition has been primarily developed for machining high temperature alloys and particularly difficult to machine steels. An AlTiN coating enables machining at cutting speeds beyond 100 m/min at depths of cut up to 1.5XD on some of the most difficult to machine alloys. To optimise the tool life, the Hanita 4778 cutters incorporate a corner radius of 0.2 or 0.3 mm as standard, depending upon cutter diameter. The Hanita 4777 is available with a square end, a radius or a corner chamfer to reduce the potential for edge chipping. A TiAlN coating on a micro grain carbide substrate assists both edge toughness and wear resistance to support the 4777 series' claim to be a high performance end mill all-rounder suitable for a wide range of materials and applications. Cutting speed capability from 25 to 200 m/min, depending upon material, give end users the opportunity to reduce their tooling inventory with an end mill that is suitable for side milling, slotting and general machining with high material removal rates. Both the 4777 and 4778 have a 38º flute angle that is polished to enhance the efficient removal of swarf from the cutting edge. This combination of flute geometry and smooth finish, says ITC, allows the Hanita cutters to perform at exceptional metal removal parameters.
