High accuracy laser profiler cuts sheet, plate and three dimensional formed shapes

The Space Gear laser cutting machine is able to cut flat sheet and plate at high speed and with incredible accuracy, as well as three dimensional formed shapes and 6-axis rotary fabrication of pipe, tube and structural steel. Available in two sizes, the Space Gear 48 can accommodate 2,500 by 1,250 mm sheet material, while the larger Space Gear 510 can process 3,050 by 1,525 mm sheets. Axis travels are 2,785 by 1,270 mm and 3,345 by 1,545 mm in X and Y for each machine respectively. The Z axis for both machines is 420 mm and linear rapid traverse rates are 24 m/min. Integrated into the machine’s base casting, a new generation laser resonator provides a constant-beam-length delivery system for exceptional cutting performance. CO2 laser power levels range from 1.5 to 4 kW and the hybrid design of the Space Gear, with the table moving through a fixed portal means there are fewer mirrors in the beam path, which provides a much more stable laser beam with better cutting performance. Mazak states that a Space Gear machine fitted with a 2.5 kW resonator has almost the same cutting capability as a 4 kW flying optic laser machine. This reduces both the cost of the capital investment required and, just as importantly, makes a significant difference to the running costs with a power saving of around 25 per cent. The compact 2-axis head has a 7.5 inch focus lens capable of cutting any material and thickness, and also features a continuous rotation A axis and a ±135 deg B axis for cutting complex profiles in hollow section material and bevels on plate material. Designed to access tight corners and joints, the head is equipped with a non-contact three-dimensional profile sensor to keep a constant distance between the nozzle and the workpiece. A low-power semi conductor laser fitted to the cutting head can be used to clearly indicate with a red spot the programmed cutting path for 2D and 3D part profile verification.
