CoroMill 5B90 mill from Sandvik Coromant suits auto parts

Sandvik Coromant has launched CoroMill 5B90, an indexable insert milling cutter for finishing aluminium components. The tool features a special cutting edge arrangement that is said to deliver excellent surface quality without burr formation and reduce cost-per-part by up to 30%.

CoroMill 5B90 is suitable for automotive industry applications such as machining cylinder heads, gearboxes, valve blocks and motor block crankshaft and deck faces. When machining the cylinder heads of a four-cylinder engine made from AlSi9Cu-1 at a cut depth of 0.7 mm, rotational speed of 7,000 rpm and a feedrate of 12,500 mm/min, CoroMill 5B90 (160 mm diameter, nine cutting edges) achieved a tool life of 40,000 parts. Because no cost-intensive insert adjustment is necessary, set-up time can be reduced by up to 66%, says Sandvik Coromant. Although each tool is custom-made for customers, PCD inserts are offered from stock.
