Turning centres from Mazak at MACH 2010

These three turning centres are among seven Yamazaki Mazak machine tools making their MACH debut. CNC machining centres and the multi-tasking series of Mazak machines will also be on show alongside the turning centres detailed. The Slant Turn NEXUS 550M, a turning centre capable of heavy-duty machining of chucking work up to 1 m diameter by 3.2 m length, comes with a 21 in chuck (18 in and 24 in chucks are options too) and the choice of 2 m or 3 m bed. The turning centre's main spindle is a 1,000 rpm, 45 kW, gear driven unit with two gear ranges and 7,000 Nm of torque available. The result is a turning centre capable of taking depths of cut up to 10 mm at feed rates of 0.8 mm/rev in SCM chromium molybdenum steel. The addition of a 7.5 kW rotary tool spindle, with 95 Nm of torque provides high efficiency machining from high-power face milling to high-speed drilling. The Mazak Megaturn NEXUS 900 vertical turning centre has a moving column design, rather than the more conventional fixed column. This eliminates the potential interference caused by having the X-axis attached to a fixed column and Mazak has been able to significantly increase the machining capacity, making it ideal for tall, up to 800 mm, large diameter, up to 920 mm, workpieces weighing up to 3,000 kg (including the chuck). This design also creates a much more rigid machining platform, evidenced by its ability to machine an 8 mm wide groove at a position 370 mm away from the chuck face without chatter. With a 30 kW, gear driven, 3,655 Nm torque spindle Megaturn Nexus 900 is a heavy-duty turning centre capable of taking large depths of cut at low speeds. The UK-built Quick Turn SMART 350 turning centre has 420 mm maximum machining diameter and up to 102 mm in bar diameter. Standard features include high rigidity built-in spindle units, NC tailstock with number 5 Morse taper spindle, 12 position drum turret, and rapid traverse rates of 30 m/min and 33 m/min in the X and Z axes. At the heart of Quick Turn SMART is the new MAZATROL SMART control system, designed for 2-axis turning and 3-axis milling operations, which offers significantly faster programming compared with EIA/ISO CNC systems.
