Germany headquartered machine tool and laser manufacturer Trumpf has assumed control of British company SPI Lasers.

Shareholders of SPI Lasers approved the sale of more than 90 percent of the company’s shares to Trumpf. “We are very pleased to welcome SPI Lasers to the Trumpf Group,” said Peter Leibinger, vice-chairman of the Managing Board and head of the Laser Technology and Electronics Division. “Both companies will benefit from the acquisition,” he said. The market for industrial lasers will continue to grow, with this including fibre lasers for applications in the low power range, said Trumpf. SPI Lasers is one of the leading manufacturers of fibre lasers. The company has a broad product range which will complement Trumpf's product portfolio, it was further added. SPI boasts a worldwide distribution network, numerous patents as well as fibre laser manufacturing. "The acquisition offers SPI Lasers and Trumpf the opportunity to enjoy excellent market growth in the field of fibre lasers in the future,” Mr Leibinger concluded. Trumpf said it intends to maintain and expand the merchant laser sales channel established by SPI Lasers. It is expected that other OEM products will be marketed through this channel over time. David Parker, CEO of SPI Lasers, added: "We too are delighted to have passed this milestone. The team can now focus on delivering quality laser sources to our customers that enhance their product offerings."
