Subcontract welding manager appointed at Thompson

Thompson Friction Welding has appointed a new manager to head up its subcontract friction welding service.

Jayne Shimwell (pictured, with some of her team), who has worked in Thompson's subcontract department for 15 years, works with a 10-strong team at the Midlands-based facility, said to be the largest of its kind in Europe. Following recent investment in the subcontract facility, it now has 12 friction welding machines capable of welding a wide range of components in varying diameters and lengths, and in a variety of dissimilar materials, such as stainless steel to carbon steel and copper to aluminium. As well as strong demand for friction welding from the oil and gas exploration industry, Ms Shimwell explained: "More businesses are using our subcontract facility, not only for friction welding components for small, medium or large production runs, but also for development and research purposes."
