Renishaw launches two new metal additive manufacturing machines at German exhibition

UK metrology and 3D printer manufacturer Renishaw launched two new metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems and a new build preparation software package, QuantAM, at the formnext 2015 exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany in mid-November.

Featuring a build volume of 250 by 250 by 350 mm, the RenAM 500M builds complex metal components directly from CAD using metal powder fusion technology. Highlights of the system include a Renishaw designed and engineered optical system with dynamic focussing; automated powder sieving and recirculation; 500 W ytterbium fibre laser and patented filter system. A 19-in touchscreen operator interface is also standard. The system is intended for serial production in a single metal type.

Formnext also sees the launch of the AM400 flexible metal additive manufacturing system. A development of the AM250 platform, it has the same build volume (250 by 250 by 300 mm), plus machine updates including larger filter, improved control software, revised gas flow and window protection system, and a new 400 W optical system that provides a reduced laser beam diameter (70 micron). Existing 200 Watt material files for the AM 250 system are directly transferable to the AM 400.

In other news, the company is developing its Additive Manufacturing Solutions Centres for launch early next year. Here manufacturers will benefit from dedicated incubator cells equipped with Renishaw AM systems. Customers can run an evaluation project to assess how AM might benefit their company with the support of Renishaw engineers.
